JEWELRY EDUCATION > GLOSSARY > Bezel Set
This setting features an elevated collar of metal that surrounds a gemstone and tends to be found on many modern designs. A bezel setting holds the gem more securely than other settings because it surrounds the stone more fully. A bezel setting protects the edges of a stone and helps to keep the stone from becoming cloudy by keeping dirt and oils from building up. The surrounding metal, however, also limits the amount of light that can reach the stone, leading to a diminished brilliance.
