JEWELRY EDUCATION > GLOSSARY > Chains
In the jewelry world, a chain can be either an essential component of a more complicated necklace, or it can actually be the necklace all by itself. Most chains and chain necklaces sold as fine jewelry are made of one of the precious metals you have studied thus far: platinum, gold or sterling silver. That much they have in common. But as advances in technology allowed for easier and more complex manipulation of these metals, jewelers and designers have been able to create an increasing variety of different chain patterns and design.
