Garnets are colorful, lively, and durable members of a complex mineral group. Though their traditional color is dark red, though garnets are found in many different colors and shades. The group consists of several gemstone species and varieties, leading to much contention about what classifies for a garnet and what does not. Classification issues, however, have no impact on the rich, bold colors that the garnet family of gems features. The birthstone for January, the gems range from deep yellow, orange, pink, glowing red, and even sparkling green. There are garnets that change color in different light, translucent green garnets that look like jade, garnets with stars, garnet varieties that have been mined for thousands of years and garnets that were just discovered in the last decade.
